Minister of Irrigation Highlights Second Generation of Egyptian Irrigation System at World Water Day Celebration


Cairo: Mr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, attended a celebration for World Water Day 2025, organised by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in partnership with the European Union delegation in Egypt.



According to State Information Service Egypt, the event’s theme was ‘Preserving Glaciers’ and was attended by numerous governmental and international dignitaries, including Ms. Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, and several Egyptian ministers and media figures.



During the event, cooperation protocols were signed between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and other ministries to enhance public awareness of water issues. A notable protocol with the Ministry of Awqaf focused on integrating water and climate topics into mosque sermons. Additionally, a protocol with the Ministry of Education aims to incorporate water conservation education into school programs.



A video presentation detailed the evolution of irrigation in Egypt, highlighting the progress from ancient systems to modern advancements. Minister Sewilam emphasized the importance of the second generation of the Egyptian irrigation system, ‘Irrigation System 2.0,’ which focuses on addressing current water challenges, including population growth and resource management. The initiative includes nine main axes, such as water treatment, digital transformation, climate adaptation, and governance.



Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, Minister of Awqaf, and Dr. Mohamed Abdel Latif, Minister of Education and Technical Education, underscored the vital role of religious teachings and education in promoting water conservation. Ms. Eichhorst reiterated the European Union’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s water management efforts through continued collaboration.



The celebration served as a platform to reaffirm Egypt’s dedication to sustainable water management and highlighted the critical role of international cooperation in addressing global water challenges.
