Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh Monday announced a new 30 percent subsidy to install grid-connected, rooftop home solar systems.

The new residential renewable energy subsidy includes the installment of 4,000 solar cell systems at a total cost of JD8 million, and 5,000 solar heating systems worth JD3 million with aim of cutting the household electricity bill.

The subsidy is important to sustain the dynamism of the market and companies in the sector, preserve existing job opportunities, create new job opportunities, increase investments in renewable energy and offer support to the public to invest in solar energy to generate electricity, heat water and increase the competitiveness of vital sectors, Kharabsheh told a press conference.

The renewable energy subsidy program, he pointed out, is in line with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals as it effectively contributes to a comprehensive and smooth clean energy transition with a positive econ
omic and social impact and meet emission-cutting targets and Jordan’s international environmental commitments.

Kharabsheh said the ministry, through the the Renewable Energy Fund and the “rural fils” under the electricity tariff, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development and the National Aid Fund, provided a full grant and 100% subsidy to poor families and injured servicemen to install renewable energy systems and solar panels.

He pointed to a comprehensive and sustainable restructuring and revamp of the electricity and energy sector for the benefit of all sectors and to achieve balance and stability in the power system.

The minister said renewable energy is the largest local source of energy, accounting for nearly 27 percent of electricity generation, expressing hope to increase this ratio in the future.
