Mikati meets with MP Bassil, “Renewal Bloc”; Rifi calls for national defense leadership, Hajjar addresses refugee crisis

Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Wednesday held talks with MP Gebran Bassil at the Grand Serail, discussing the latest political developments.

Mikati also met with the “Renewal Bloc” MPs, including Fouad Makhzoumi, Ashraf Rifi, and Michel Moawad.

Following the meeting, MP Ashraf Rifi emphasized the need for Lebanese leadership to halt the bloodshed and protect the nation amid Hezbollah’s escalating war, which risks dragging Lebanon into a regional conflict.

Rifi urged state coordination in aiding displaced citizens and thanked international donors, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Rifi further warned against ignoring private property violations and called on the government to reassert its authority over decisions of war and peace, while advocating for immediate presidential elections independent of the southern conflict.

Social Affairs Minister, Hector Hajjar, also met with Mikati to discuss the urgent need for housing Syrian refugees residing in public spaces in Sidon and Beirut.

Hajjar
proposed deeper dialogue with the UNHCR to facilitate voluntary returns and suggested utilizing vacant buildings for refugee accommodation.

The Justice Minister also raised concerns about customs challenges faced by NGOs importing aid, stressing the need for better organization.

Lastly, Hajjar requested expedited funding for the “Aman” program, which Mikati pledged to resolve by mid-month.

The Prime Minister also held discussions with Labor Minister, Mustafa Bayram.
