Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Thursday welcomed Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa, at the Grand Serail.
In a statement following the meeting, Ambassador Moussa reiterated Egypt’s unwavering stance against any aggression towards Lebanon and expressed solidarity with the country. Furthermore, the Egyptian diplomat condemned the recent Israeli escalation, stating that the policy of assassinations leads to negative consequences for all and the region.
Moussa also highlighted the ongoing Egyptian efforts, in collaboration with regional and international partners, to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and curb current escalations. He noted Egypt’s concern over Israel’s apparent lack of will to reach a ceasefire and reiterated that continued conflict in Gaza exacerbates tensions on multiple fronts.
‘The key to resolving the situation lies in halting the violence in Gaza. While the situation in Lebanon is critical, it is fundamentally linked to the larger issue in Gaza. We are working with internati
onal and regional partners, including the UN Security Council, to secure a binding ceasefire,’ Moussa noted.
When asked if recent escalations had derailed ceasefire negotiations, Moussa acknowledged the setbacks but reaffirmed the need for diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire, stressing that negotiations must proceed under conditions that facilitate a resolution, aiming for an end to the violence.
‘There can be no effective de-escalation on any front without a ceasefire in Gaza, which is crucial for alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people,’ Moussa concluded.
On another level, Prime Minister Mikati extended his congratulations to Defense Minister, Maurice Sleem, and Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun, on the occasion of Army Day.
