Mashat stresses importance of cooperation with FAO to ensure food security

International Cooperation Minister Rania Mashat reviewed prospects of cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) meant to promote bilateral efforts in the food security and agriculture domains.

During a meeting Sunday with FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa Abdul Hakim el-Waer, the minister discussed ways to boost Egypt- FAO drives, especially in light of the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP27, set for the Red Sea resort city of Sham el-Sheikh in Nov., under the umbrella of Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy-2050.

Mashat hailed ongoing Egypt-FAO cooperation, highlighting significance of all floated activities, especially amid current challenges facing food security.

Also enhancing practices, as part of Egypt’s strategic relations with the UN and its affiliated agencies and programs, figured high on the two sides’ talks, with a view to strengthening food, water, agriculture, animal wealth and biosecurity efforts.

The talks also took up future partnership between both sides, in accordance with the State’s priorities, including efforts to combat climate change to promote the green recovery and reduce harmful emissions.

Meantime, Mashat probed with the FAO official the 2nd edition of Egypt International Cooperation forum (Egypt-ICF), that is planned to set a unified vision for the green transition ahead of COP27.

The event will bring together public, as well as private sectors’ officials, along with multilateral development banks’ representatives, in order to draw up a unified vision and coordinate efforts so as to push forward climate action in Africa, enhance innovative and sustainable financing instruments, and narrow the financing gap for green transition, according to the minister.

For his part, the FAO official underscored the organization’s keeness on extending full support to Egypt’s hosting of COP27.

He cited a number of initiatives and activities FAO is scheduled to bring forward during COP27.
