The Greater Madaba Municipality has established a shelter for stray dogs east of the city to help reduce the spread of stray dogs in the city’s neighborhoods.

In response to citizens’ complaints, Mayor of Greater Madaba Aref Rawajeh said that four dunums of land have been allocated within the Joint Services Council’s campus east of the city. The area has been fenced, and over 25 small rooms and canopies were built as part of the shelter, which is staffed by a veterinarian. A vehicle has also been allocated to capture stray dogs and bring them to the shelter, where they will be provided with food and water.

Rawajeh highlighted that the issue of stray dogs is widespread across the Kingdom and that the shelter’s establishment is part of the municipality’s efforts to control their numbers by housing them in a designated facility.

However, he noted that the shelter, with its current resources, is not enough to fully address the problem of stray dogs in the city, especially as “poisoning or shooting the animals
is illegal and constitutes a violation of the law and animal rights.”

Rawajeh called for a collective national effort to address the stray dog issue, emphasizing that municipalities alone, with their limited capabilities, cannot tackle the problem but are doing what they can to mitigate it.
