LRT project is a ‘high-speed engine for development’

Minister of Transport Kamel El Wazir has described the Light Rail Transit project as a “high-speed engine for development,” given its significant economic importance for transporting goods and its connection with Egyptian ports.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday 21/2/2023, Wazir revealed that the project is expected to be launched by the end of 2024.

He said completion rate of stations and bridges is now 40 per cent, and work is under way to manufacture the mobile units (Express and Regular) in Germany, with the first unit expected to arrive in December.

Meanwhile, work will start at the first workshop in October Gardens District of Giza’s 6th of October City by late 2023, the minister said, applauding the efficiency of the national companies cooperating with the Transport Ministry in the project, whose total cost has been estimated at $3 billion.

Wazir said about EGP 2 trillion had been dedicated to improve railway and metro networks, along with roads and river ports as well as sea ports nationwide, over the past 10 years only.
