Lower House Speaker Meets PAP President in Johannesburg

Johannesburg – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami, held, on Thursday in Johannesburg, talks with president of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Fortune Charumbira.

Talbi El Alami and Charumbira took the opportunity to discuss a number of topics of common interest, in particular ways of injecting new momentum into cooperation between the Moroccan and continental parliaments, identifying areas of cooperation and promoting effective parliamentary action in the service of Africa and its peoples.

Talbi El Alami reiterated the Kingdom of Morocco’s determination to promote joint African action, as well as the various programs of the continental legislative institution in support of social and economic progress, education systems, regional integration, democratic governance and peace on the continent.

Morocco is a major player in Afro-African cooperation, he said, highlighting the strategic vision and leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which have positioned the Kingdom as a key
economic player in Africa.

Talbi El Alami recalled the many initiatives and strategic projects launched by His Majesty the King to promote the continent’s development.

For his part, the president of the Pan-African Parliament praised the initiatives undertaken by Morocco, under the Sovereign’s wise leadership, in favor of Africa and African citizens.

He cited the major Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, the ambitious Royal Africa-Atlantic initiative to give some African countries access to the Atlantic Ocean, and debt cancellation for some of Africa’s least developed countries.

The many investments made by the Kingdom on the continent and the numerous cooperation agreements signed with its African partners illustrate, in many respects, its laudable efforts for an integrated, prosperous and resolutely forward-looking Africa, he said.

The discussions between El Alami and Charumbira took place on the sidelines of the 12th Annual Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments, being held from September 18
to 20 at PAP headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.
