Jordanian Trade Unions Emphasize Adherence to Occupational Health, Safety Amid Heatwave

The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions has underscored the importance for employers across various economic establishments, including municipalities and the Greater Amman Municipality, to comply with occupational health and safety standards.

Employers are urged to ensure that necessary safety measures and procedures are implemented, especially during the current heatwave affecting the Kingdom.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Federation emphasized that workers should not be exposed to direct sunlight during peak hours. It called on employers and management of economic establishments to avoid jeopardizing worker safety by assigning tasks that could harm them during the extreme temperatures.

The statement highlighted that many labor sectors, such as agriculture, construction, and service industries, operate under direct sunlight and in open spaces. This necessitates the implementation of measures within the work environment to safeguard worker health and safety, including shift work, providing
rest periods, access to cold drinking water, and occupational safety equipment like head covers and umbrellas.

The Federation also urged trade unions and their committees across various economic activities and workplaces to follow the instructions of the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health in the Ministry of Labor, and to heed warnings issued by the Jordan Meteorological Department and other relevant authorities.

The Federation further stated that ensuring occupational health and safety requirements within the work environment is a labor right guaranteed by the Labor Law, and is the responsibility of employers and management of economic establishments.
