Santander: Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Monday discussed with Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, the need to mobilize international action to end the Israeli aggression and humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, and achieve the two-state solution as the only path towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.
The ministers also tackled the next steps to rally international recognition of a Palestinian state, and Safadi valued Madrid’s move in that regard.
The ministers warned of an expansion of the war, with Safadi stressing the need to spare Lebanon from a new war and urging adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to prevent further escalation.
The ministers also discussed Jordanian-Spanish ties and stressed the “deep and distinguished” friendship between the two countries, pointing to a common desire for broader cooperation in various fields.
Safadi and Albares also participated in a
panel discussion within the second edition of a symposium “Spain in the World: The International Order and Geopolitical Changes”, titled: The Road to Peace: Implementing the Two-State Solution”, which was held under the auspices of the Spanish foreign ministry.
Safadi said Jordan’s position is consistent on the need to end the aggression on Gaza, provide enough and sustainable humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip, and launch an action plan to implement the two-state solution, warning that the alternative is a one-state solution that will perpetuate apartheid.
Safadi said Arab countries presented the Arab Peace Plan in 2002, with a clear vision that there is no alternative to the two-state solution, but “there is no peace partner in Israel now.”
Any talk of the day after in Gaza, he said, must be within a comprehensive plan to end the root cause of the conflict, end the occupation and embody the independent Palestinian state that lives in security and peace alongside Israel.
Safadi warned of the dang
er of an expansion of the conflict in the region, stressing the need to adhere to Security Council Resolution 1701 and de-escalation in Lebanon.
He stressed the need to continue work with Spain, noting its leading role to take effective steps to stop the aggression on Gaza, bring in aid, and implement a roadmap with clear timelines to implement the two-state solution.
For his part, Albares stressed Madrid’s commitment to the two-state solution, an immediate ceasefire and a just peace based on the two-state solution, pointing to the strong Jordanian-Spanish relations and a keenness to strengthen them within the partnership with the European Union.
The Spanish minister appreciated Jordan’s efforts to stop the war and ensure the protection of civilians and delivery of aid to Gaza, as well as its endeavors to bring about security, stability and peace in the region, stressing continuation of work with the Kingdom to achieve that goal.
