The Foreign Relations Commission of Panama’s National Assembly On August 23 carried out the protocol act for the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group between Jordan and Panama, according to a statement by the Panamanian embassy in Amman. The ceremony was led by the President of the Foreign Relations Commission Gonzalo Gonzalez, who swore in the Panamanian deputies as members of the friendship group, and had the virtual participation of Panamanian ambassador to Jordan Jose Ulises Lescure and Adli Al khaladi, Ambassador of Jordan concurrent in Panama from Mexico, it said. Lescure said in remarks that the creation of the friendship group would help strengthen bilateral relationship, close to commemorating 30 years of diplomatic relations on February 7, 2024. Jordan and Panama share common values and principles in the international community as the both have a long-standing tradition in diplomatic mediation for the resolution of international conflicts in their respective regions, he pointed out. The envoy said Jordan has been a relevant actor in peace efforts in the Middle East, while Panama has been a promoter of peace and security in Central America. Both nations, he added, promote in their foreign policy the respect and observance of international law and multilateralism as the basis of peaceful global coexistence. For his part, ambassador Al khaladi expressed satisfaction with the establishment of the friendship group, expressing confidence it will be a “model of political and diplomatic effectiveness for the strengthening of bilateral relations in the fields of political, economic and cultural cooperation”. Inter-parliamentary friendship groups, as a tool of modern diplomacy, have the purpose of promoting international cooperation, political dialogue, as well as mutual cultural understanding between both nations at the legislative level, said the statement. Panama and Jordan established diplomatic relations on February 7th, 1994 and in almost 30 years, the two countries signed various agreements in political, tourism and academic fields. Currently, Panama seeks to continue strengthening international cooperation in the political and security spheres, as well as expanding commercial exchange. Panama offers a door to the Latin American and Caribbean region due to its strategic geographical position, the Logistics Center that includes the Panama Canal and the main free trade zone in the hemisphere (2nd largest globally), special economic zones, as well as its international banking center and the greatest air connectivity in the region, the embassy stated.
