Amman: Jordan joined the countries of the world in celebrating World Environment Day (WED), which is held this year under the slogan:”Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

The Kingdom is making “remarkable” efforts to sustain harmony with nature, which are reflected in programs implemented by the Ministry of Environment to combat desertification, increase green area, and preserve water sources.

On the occasion, Minister of Environment, Dr. Muawieh Khalid Radaideh, said the 2024 WED theme covers “critical and wide-ranging” issues that the world has never witnessed before, which have a “devastating” impact that affected all, threaten social peace and global food security.

The minister added that the planet Earth suffers from desertification, water scarcity, deforestation and fires, high temperatures, catastrophic floods and poaching of animals and birds, which threatens biodiversity and lands.

The whole world is at “critical” junctures to confront these crises, which requires intensifying in
ternational efforts to combat factors that would affect the planet and the environment in particular, as quickly as possible, and take various radical measures and solutions to confront these challenges, he pointed out.

Jordan, he affirmed, is “committed” to working with international and local partners to address crises of desertification and climate, preserve and rehabilitate environment, and increase green area, in line with its national commitments within international agreements to confront the crises of climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution.

Radaideh noted the ministry, in partnership with all national and international bodies and institutions, has taken multiple “effective” measures to protect environmental systems, especially from desertification threat.

He indicated that this action seeks to achieve the “best” practices for preserving the human environment, primarily various guidelines on sound global environmental management to confront the desertification risks.

Within these WED c
elebrations, the ministry launched a national five-stage campaign for public cleanliness in all the government’s governorates, opened a pioneering environmental park in Wasfi Al Tal Forest, planted thousands of forest trees with the participation of partner agencies and environmental associations, and kicked off a related awareness campaign.
