The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Greater Amman Municipality, the Ministry of Environment, and private sector associations, inaugurated the second Recycling in Jordan Activity (JRA) conference and exhibition on Tuesday.
The event is held under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Waste Management and Recycling Practices in the Kingdom.”
The two-day conference, concluding on Wednesday, aims to advance private sector-led recycling initiatives and foster connections among key stakeholders, including government agencies, private enterprises, waste generators, recycling service providers, material processors, and training organizations.
The event showcases achievements, promotes best practices, and explores strategies to enhance recycling efforts across Jordan.

USAID Jordan Deputy Mission Director Christopher Steele emphasized the critical role of recycling in addressing climate change.
“Reusing and recycling products not only help maintain cleanliness in our communities but also play a crucial role in tackling the climate crisis. We can promote recycling, create jobs, and increase private sector profits while reducing landfill waste and preserving our planet’s precious resources,” Steele stated.
Jihad Sawaer, Assistant Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, reiterated the Jordanian government’s dedication to enhancing the waste management sector and improving w
orkforce capabilities, stressing the importance of community awareness and government support in providing essential infrastructure for collection, sorting, and processing centers to ensure environmental sustainability.
Ahmed Malkawi, City Director of the Greater Amman Municipality, detailed the municipality’s strategic plans, including the “Amman Resilience” strategy, the “Amman Climate Change Plan,” and the “Amman Green City Plan.”
He highlighted the municipality’s efforts to manage solid waste with a new vision, improve waste management stages, and develop infrastructure such as the Ghabawi landfill. Malkawi also mentioned the establishment of the Amman Vision Company for treatment and recycling and the modernization of the waste management fleet.
Malkawi noted the importance of international partnerships through joint projects, such as the commercial sector waste recycling project funded by USAID, the waste sorting project from the source funded by GIZ, and the mechanical-biological waste treatment pla
