Secretary-General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW), Maha Ali, on Sunday met with the Arab Women Organization (AWO) delegation to monitor the Kingdom’s upcoming parliamentary elections from a gender equality perspective.

The delegation, consisting of 6 Arab countries: Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco and Libya, was headed by the former advisor to the Egyptian Prime Minister, Maj. Gen. Rifat Qamssan, as the mission’s work will extend until the 12th of this month, according to a JNCW statement.

During the meeting, Ali praised the AWO’s role in supporting efforts to empower women in Arab countries by exchanging expertise and conducting “qualitative” studies and activities.

Ali reviewed the AWO’s efforts and its partnerships with the Kingdom’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) and Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs in enhancing Jordan’s women participation in elections as candidates and voters.

Ali also referred to partnerships with various national bodies to advan
ce Jordanian women and their fair representation in various fields.

Ali stressed the importance of the IEC’s measures in enhancing women’s electoral participation, by facilitating their access to electoral centers, specifically female voters with disabilities.

Meanwhile, the JNCW Deputy Secretary-General, Nisreen Sayed, highlighted the key points in the commission’s analytical report on the Kingdom’s local and general lists running for the upcoming elections.

Sayed noted gender gap in the 2024 election lists decreased to 69.8%, compared to 72.6% and 74.8% in the 2020 and 2016 elections, respectively.
