Japan Voices Support to UNRWA


Japanese Ambassador Okuyama Jiro reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), emphasizing the agency’s key role to provide essential services to refugees.

The envoy spoke during a ceremony to launch the Leadership Excellence and Accountability Program, a Japan-backed UNRWA initiative, highlighting the strong partnership between Japan and the refugee agency, which marked its 70th anniversary last year.

The program is designed to enhance accountability and compliance within UNRWA to improve the quality of services provided on the front lines, and offer practical learning opportunities and workshops with a focus on the themes of women, peace and security, according to a statement.

UNRWA Deputy Commissioner General Natalie Boucly and Director of UNRWA Affairs Olaf Becker also emphasized the agency’s commitment to strengthening governance, ensuring transparency and upholding the core values of humanity, neutrality, integr
ity and independence throughout the program’s implementation.
