International Psychiatric Conference Opens in Amman


Representing Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein, Senate Member Dr. Yousef Qoussous opened the 7th International Conference of the Jordanian Psychiatric Association on Thursday.

In a pre-recorded address, Princess Muna highlighted the significance of this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month, stating, “Communities, organizations, and governments are taking concrete steps to enhance understanding and awareness of dementia. As a show of solidarity, buildings and landmarks will be illuminated, and thousands will participate in marches and activities aimed at reducing the stigma associated with dementia.”

She continued, “Throughout this month, we will amplify our message through social media using hashtags: #TimeToActOnAlzheimer and #TimeToActOnDementia. These hashtags represent our collective resolve to change attitudes toward dementia and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their condition, are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. They serve as a reminder that we must act now.”

Conclud
ing her remarks, Princess Muna called for an active approach during the awareness month. “We must seize this opportunity to promote education and awareness, making tangible strides in our actions. Despite the distances that separate us, we must move forward with a shared ambition to create a better future for people with dementia and their caregivers.”

Dr. Qoussous, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of mental health as a key medical specialty closely linked to public life. “It is imperative that we continue to elevate the field of mental health and raise societal awareness of its significance. These conferences are crucial for ongoing medical education and development.”

He also praised Jordan’s role as a pioneer in advancing healthcare, noting that the conference reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing both the general healthcare sector and the field of psychiatry.

Conference Chairman Dr. Alaa Farroukh expressed optimism about the event’s potential to foster the exchange of knowled
ge and showcase the latest advancements in the treatment of psychological disorders. He underscored the importance of raising awareness about mental health and combating stigma within society.

Dr. Nasser Sharaqi, head of the conference’s scientific committee, highlighted the focus on Alzheimer’s disease during this month, naming it “Alzheimer’s Month.” He also noted Princess Muna’s global ambassadorial role for Alzheimer’s, which inspired the committee to dedicate the opening lecture to the disease.

The conference features participation from psychiatry experts and consultants from Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Jordan, with a program rich in scientific papers and personal insights.

Dr. Ziad Zoubi, President of the Medical Association, called attention to the urgent need to support psychiatrists in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of addressing the psychological disorders stemming from the conflict. He urged continuous efforts in treating these cases, stressing that they require
persistent care and attention.

At the conclusion of the conference, several guests, sponsors, and participating doctors from Arab and international countries were honored, including Jordanian physicians.
