NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi today resigned as India’s Prime Minister following the successful completion of elections to Parliament. He was elected Prime Minister for the second time in May 2019 for a term of five years.
India’s President, Droupadi Murmu, accepted the resignation and asked Modi and his Cabinet to continue in office till a new government is sworn in.
In a day of fast-paced developments, the Union Cabinet met on 5th June and advised the President to dissolve the Lok Sabha, the lower House of Parliament.
“The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet and signed an Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution,” a communique issued by Murmu’s Secretariat said.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance, which got a majority in the elections, met on 5th June to stake its claim to form the next government, also headed by Modi.
