India’s IITs seek global suggestions for environmental solutions in daily life

India’s highly-rated Institutes of Information Technology (IIT) have invited suggestions from across the globe on the theme ‘Ideas4LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment’ to inspire innovative environmental solutions in everyday life.

Described as an ‘ideathon”, the solicitations cover seven themes, namely, save water, save energy, reduce waste, cut down e-waste, say no to single-use plastics, adopt sustainable food systems, and adopt healthy lifestyles.

Launched first by IIT Delhi, the ideathon was expanded in its reach on 31st August at the IIT Bombay with India’s Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, declaring that ‘a developed economy should have a developed ecology too. We should all be citizens with an environmental sense.’

A dedicated portal, Ideas4LiFE, launched at IIT Delhi on 29th July, will accept suggestions until 15th October. Recognition and prizes will be awarded to both individuals and institutions at the end of this deadline, following a scrutiny of the online subm
issions.

During Saturday’s event, the Director of IIT Bombay, Shireesh Kedare, proposed a novel idea that students should mention their individual carbon footprints on their bio-data while applying for jobs or higher studies.

LiFE which expands as ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ is a global mass movement led by India to nudge individual and community actions to protect and preserve the environment.
