In a heartfelt address marking India’s 78th Independence Day, Ambassador Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh extended warm greetings to the Indian community in Lebanon and reflected on the historic significance of the day. Speaking from Beirut, the Ambassador emphasized the enduring principles of Ahimsa (Non-Violence) and Satyagraha (Truth) championed by Mahatma Gandhi, which continue to influence India’s foreign policy.
Ambassador Sheikh underscored India’s growing global role, citing its recent presidency of the G-20 and active participation in BRICS and other international initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the Global South. He also highlighted the longstanding and robust relations between India and Lebanon, noting that the Indian Embassy in Beirut has remained open since 1954, even through Lebanon’s most challenging periods.
A key focus of the Ambassador’s message was India’s significant contribution to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). For over 25 years, an Indian Army Battalion of 850 per
sonnel has been stationed in Ebel El Saqi, building strong ties with the local communities in South Lebanon through various humanitarian initiatives.
Ambassador Sheikh also praised the Indian community in Lebanon, numbering around 3,000, for their positive contributions to the country. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception he has received since his arrival in Lebanon on August 2, 2023, and acknowledged the efforts of the Lebanese-India Parliamentary Friendship Committee (LIPFC) and the Association for Development of Lebanese-India Relations (ADLIR) in strengthening bilateral ties.
India’s commitment to Lebanon was further demonstrated through recent donations, including $1 million worth of medicines and various Quick Impact Projects, such as the renovation of public spaces and the provision of essential equipment. The Ambassador also mentioned the successful Artificial Limb Fitment Camp held earlier this year in Beirut, with plans for a similar initiative to support an additional 500 individuals.

ighlighting the cultural ties between the two nations, Ambassador Sheikh noted the growing popularity of Yoga in Lebanon, with the Embassy organizing eight successful Yoga events across the country in June. He also mentioned the potential for collaboration in solar energy, with Lebanon being offered membership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
In closing, Ambassador Sheikh reaffirmed India’s dedication to peace and stability in the region, expressing his and his team’s commitment to working closely with the Lebanese government and people to further enhance the strong bilateral relationship. “Long live India-Lebanon friendship! Jai Hind!” he concluded.
