NEW DELHI: To mark the 55th year of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in November, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India is to organise a global event, the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES).

The Summit aims to take into account the immense technology infusion that the media and entertainment world is currently undergoing, causing a structural change in the industry, India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwani Vaishnaw said today.

Speaking at a curtain raiser event for WAVES and IFFI in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said India wants to ‘enable those worldwide who have not been able to keep up with the change to harness the best out of this structural change’.

Cinema in India ranks first in the world in the number of films produced. It earned US$1.8 billion in 2022, the last year for which full statistics are available. The Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad is the largest film studio complex in the world, according to the authoritative Guinness World Rec
ords.

In preparation for WAVES, India hosted ‘Bharat Parv’, a special event at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024 and introduced the concept.

The Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, said at today’s curtain-raiser that he aims to establish Goa as an important cultural hub. He invited the world’s media and entertainment industry to go to the state in a ‘spirit of innovation and collaboration’.
