Independent Election Commission (IEC) Chairman, Musa Al-Maaytah, received on Sunday a delegation from the Arab Women Organization (AWO) mission to observe the 2024 parliamentary elections, chaired by Major General Refaat Komsan.

The mission includes representatives from Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Iraq, and Lebanon.

During the meeting, Al-Maaytah stated that Jordan took a gradual approach to implementing the political modernization system, ensuring that the democratic transition is always compatible and safe, implying that the laws governing political life created a suitable political environment that increased women’s representation in the Parliament.

He went on to say that the IEC set up a unit dedicated to empowering women in order to help and facilitate their participation in public life and access to decision-making platforms. This was demonstrated by the adoption of a collaborative work plan with the Jordanian National Commission for Women and by being open with all relevant stakeholders.

Al-Maaytah high
lighted the latest preparations for the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on Tuesday, as well as the IEC’s integrity procedures. He also briefed the delegation on the polling and counting mechanisms, as well as the mechanism for dealing with electoral violations and crimes, including electoral violence against women.

He pointed out that for the first time, a specific platform will be available to display the results of the counting operations for local lists and their candidates, as well as for the general list and parties, allowing citizens to follow them directly and see the results firsthand.

Al-Maaytah emphasized the IEC’s keenness on the participation of persons with disabilities in the elections, exercising their rights to run and vote, facilitating access to polling stations, and prioritize voters with disabilities, pregnant women, and those unable to exercise their electoral rights themselves, in the voting process.

For their part, Komsan and the accompanying delegation appreciated the o
penness and transparency with which the IEC deals with delegations participating in observing the elections, and publishing all instructions and data on its website, which is constantly updated and designed in a user-friendly manner.
