Housing Minister Commends Egyptian Firms for Tanzanian Dam Project

Cairo: Minister of Housing Sherif El-Sherbiny highlighted the importance of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant project in Tanzania, showcasing Egyptian companies’ expertise in handling major projects for African partners. He shared these comments during a meeting on Sunday to review the project’s progress, which is being carried out by the Egyptian alliance of Arab Contractors and El-Sewedy Electric on the Rufiji River in Tanzania.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the project includes a 1,025-metre dam with a reservoir capacity of 32.8 billion cubic metres and a 2,115-megawatt hydropower plant located on the Rufiji River in the Morogoro Natural Reserve. Once finished, the project will produce 6,307 gigawatt-hours per year, providing electricity to approximately 17 million Tanzanian households. Additionally, it will help manage floods, safeguard the environment, and guarantee consistent water supply for agriculture and wildlife conservation in one of Africa’s biggest forests.
