Heavy rain-triggered flooding causes swelling water levels in Guangxi

GUANGXI: Heavy rainfall in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has caused swelling water levels in many rivers since Saturday, ranging from one to six metres.

According to a report by China Central Television (CCTV), as relayed by local authorities, six small and medium-sized rivers, namely Sitang River, Xiyun River, and Qinglong River, have experienced flood levels surpassing warning thresholds by margins ranging from 0.31 to 1.68 metres.

Cities including Nanning, Baise, Guilin, and Fangchenggang have issued flood warnings accordingly.

Local authorities have also urged residents to remain cautious and take necessary measures to prevent and mitigate potential disasters such as floods, mudslides, and landslides that could be triggered by heavy rainfall.

Heavy rainfall has hit various places in southern and southwest China since Friday, causing severe flooding in multiple rivers that has surpassed the designated warning levels.

The Ministry of Water Resources issued a level IV emergency response
for flood in Guangxi, Guangdong, and Fujian provinces on Sunday, and dispatched two work teams to Guangxi and Guangdong.

China has a four-level emergency response system for disaster relief, with Level IV being the lowest and Level I the highest.
