Governor of Jeollanamdo affirms South Korea’s bid to host COP33 in 2028

Kim Yung-rok, the Governor of Jeollanamdo Province, South Korea, has affirmed his country’s bid to host the 33rd Conference of the Parties (COP33) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Jeollanamdo in 2028. He expressed his desire for Jeollanamdo to make a significant contribution to international efforts to combat climate change.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Kim Yung-rok emphasised the urgency of addressing climate change in light of recent global climate crises, such as the devastating wildfires in the Mediterranean and floods in Libya.

He stressed the importance of coastal ecosystems in mitigating climate change and noted Jeollanamdo’s commitment to preserving and restoring these ecosystems. The province’s rich coastal ecosystems, including numerous islands, form the foundation for achieving carbon neutrality.

He highlighted initiatives such as the creation of sea forests as habitats for marine life and S. Korea’s first tidal flat vegetation restoration
project, demonstrating their dedication to environmental protection. He also mentioned the development of the National Marine Eco Park and their commitment to the successful hosting of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Exhibition’, which will be held in Yeosu’s Dolsan Jinmo District from 17th July to 16th August 2026, under the theme ‘Connecting the Island, Sea and the Future’.

Yung-rok expressed his hope that COP28 will generate insightful discussions on conserving coastal ecosystems and developing effective strategies for climate crisis response. He commended the UAE for the successful organisation of COP28.
