Government develops infrastructure for smart, sustainable, green transport sector

Minister of International Cooperation Rania el- Mashat on Friday reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.

Since it was announced in 2015, Egypt has made great strides towards transforming the transport infrastructure into a smart and sustainable sector that supports climate action, as part of a quest to transform towards a green economy, the minister told 2021 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund: Making Climate Action Count ‘Transition to Low-Carbon Economy.’

The government takes into account environmental and sustainability standards in all projects and policies it implements, she added.

The transport sector is one of the most important priorities for the state, as daily beneficiaries of metro and railway lines are estimated at more than 5.5 million citizens, Mashat said.

The government seeks, within the national development plan Egypt’s Vision 2030, to reduce air pollutants and reduce harmful emissions by about 50%, she added.

Mobilizing the necessary funds has become a pivotal matter, especially after recent challenges and fluctuations in global markets, Mashat said.

The private sector’s participation has also become of utmost necessity, and the international financial institutions should play a greater role in mobilizing the financial resources needed to enhance the participation of all relevant parties in advancing the global agenda for climate action, she added.
