Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Thursday 16/6/2022 that a full day will be designated for women during the unofficial side activities of the UN conference on climate change, COP27, set to be hosted by the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el Sheikh in November.
This day is expected to focus on the needed policies, potential solutions, and financing mechanisms that could enable women to face up to the impacts of climate change, Fouad said during her participation, along with President of the National Council of Women (NCW) Maya Morsi, in a high-level virtual meeting, organized by Egypt’s mission to the UN, to discuss accelerating the achievement of gender equality and empowering women and girls in light of the challenges posed by climate change. The meeting will shed light on Egypt’s vision towards achieving this and ways to bridge the gender gap in climate action.
Women bear the brunt of the climate crisis especially when it comes to accessing water and food and proper housing and transportation, the minister said.
Last year, Egypt launched the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050, Fouad said, adding that women’s empowerment is a key part of this strategy.
