Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad had talks on Wednesday 17/8/2022 with Canadian Minister of International Development Harjit S. Sajjan on means of promoting cooperation in climate change and biodiversity, especially with regard to financing adaptation efforts.
This falls within the framework of Egypt’s preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) and Canada’s hosting of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15).
The minister hailed the level of cooperation in the environmental domain, especially with regard to the Canadian International Development Agency.
She lauded Canada’s support for the biodiversity file, particularly as it will host the COP15.
She noted that Egypt as the host of COP14 has exerted strenuous efforts in preparing a draft of post-2020 biodiversity map.
Fouad called on countries updating national contribution plans, referring to the importance of finding adaptation projects attractive to banking financing.
She noted that Egypt was keen on updating its national contribution strategy and preparing a national strategy for climate change by 2050.
For his part, the Canadian minister underscored his country’s keenness on promoting climate action agenda and climate financing.
Sajjan lauded Egypt’s support for food and water security projects which are related to biodiversity issue.
The two sides discussed for preparing the topics to be addressed during COP27 with regard to agriculture, food security, biodiversity and carbon neutrality.
