Foreign Minister Reaffirms Egypt’s Commitment to African Peace and Development.


Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s unwavering commitment to fostering peace, security, and development across Africa. These remarks were made during his participation in the virtual Ministerial Meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty highlighted the formidable challenges the African continent faces, which impede the achievement of Agenda 2063’s goals. He stressed the importance of adhering to the African Union’s foundational principles, particularly respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal matters.

The Egyptian foreign minister called for enhancing the Peace and Security Council’s tools to effectively address security issues, given the increasing suspensions of member states. He pointed out that sanctions might not always resolve crises and could sometimes aggravate violence and the suffering of populations.

Abdelatty advoc
ated for adopting positive strategies focused on strengthening national institutions and supporting African states during transitions. He emphasized the need to enhance the African Union’s crisis management capabilities and promote post-conflict peacebuilding for long-term stability.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of restructuring the Peace and Security Council to ensure fair representation for North Africa, acknowledging the region’s historical role in the continent’s independence. Abdelatty expressed hope that the council’s protocol could be amended to grant North Africa an additional seat.
