FM warns of dragging region into regional war

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned on Sunday of dragging the region to an overall regional war, calling on the international community to intervene to end the Israeli aggression on Lebanon.

He warned of Israel’s premediated intention to escalate the situation furthermore, saying the region is now on brink of abyss.

Speaking with the UN news website following Egypt’s speech before the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, the top diplomat condemned any violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that what is now taking place in Lebanon is completely unacceptable.

There is a feeling of frustration and anger in the Arab street regarding the double standard policy adopted by the international community and the fact that there is a state above the law, he warned.

He expressed regret over the international community’s failure to take an action to end the Israeli aggression and avoid reaching a comprehensive confrontation.

He said many meetings were held over the
past period, including a meeting by the Arab-Islamic Contact Committee and the Security Council session, to address the situation in the Gaza Strip and in the occupied Palestinian territories, and the Arab position was clearly conveyed.

Egypt has been exerting efforts since day one to stem Palestinian bloodshed and is still working with the brothers in Qatar and friends in the United States to reach a ceasefire.

The real problem is the lack of political will, and that there is a party that places itself above the law, he said, accusing Israel of obstructing reaching any agreement that guarantees the release of the hostages and an immediate ceasefire.

Whenever we are close to reach an agreement, Israel start adopting provocative and unilateral policies in the region to ignite the region further more and drive attention away from the important issue, which is the immediate ceasefire and concluding the long-awaited deal, he said.

He urged the international community to take specific measures towards Israel t
hat rejects all mediation efforts, refuses to implement resolutions, and is going ahead with killing and terrorizing citizens, saying it all depends on the seriousness of the international community to address blatant breaches of international law.

He warned that if the matter was left to one party to wreak havoc in the region, an unprecedented escalation and a possible explosion in the region would take place.
