FM: State gives top priority to protecting, promoting human rights


Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Chairman of the Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights (SSCHR), Dr. Badr Abdelatty, held a virtual meeting today, September 3, 2024, with the Permanent Mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, in the presence of the Ministry’s heads and members of the Human Rights Department, as part of preparations for human rights events during the upcoming period, and in the framework of following up on the role and efforts of Egyptian missions abroad.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Director of the Public Diplomacy Department, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that the meeting discussed the latest developments related to preparations for the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which will start on September 6 and continues for nearly a month, as well as preparations for the Universal Periodic Review of
human rights in Egypt, scheduled to be held in Geneva in January 2025.

Minister Abdelatty issued directives to Egypt’s mission in Geneva to continue its efforts aimed at explaining the nature and extent of the progress witnessed at the level of the human rights file in Egypt, which reflect a national political will to advance the human rights situation of Egyptian citizens in its comprehensive sense through the implementation of the National Human Rights Strategy in all its axes, in addition to promoting social justice, stressing that the Egyptian state, with all its institutions, attaches a great importance to protecting and promoting human rights and achieving social justice.

Ambassador Abu Zeid added that the Minister of Foreign Affairs reviewed during the meeting his vision of the action plan for the upcoming stage, and listened to the proposals submitted by the Ministry’s heads of the Human Rights Department, as well as by the Permanent Mission in Geneva, in preparation for the events expected to be he
ld during the next stage.

Minister Abdelatty’s instructions to the Human Rights Department also included good preparation for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of human rights in Egypt, and intensifying coordination at the national level, this to reflect the national efforts related to implementing Egypt’s UPR recommendations of last session held in 2019, and Egypt’s keenness on holding objective and constructive dialogue with states and UN mechanisms in the human rights field.
