FM Receives UN Envoy to Yemen

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Dr. Badr Abdelatty met with Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Yemen. Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Minister emphasized Egypt’s support for the unity and territorial integrity of Yemen and the independence of its institutions. He noted the critical importance of Yemen’s security and stability to both Egypt’s national security and the Red Sea region.

Minister Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s backing for all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, one that meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people and alleviates their humanitarian suffering, according to the Yemeni National Dialogue, the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the Yemeni consultations in Riyadh, and pertinent Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.

The Minister also addressed Egypt’s support for legitimacy in Yemen, detailing the various forms of
assistance provided to the Yemeni people, especially in medical and food aid. He noted that Egypt hosts over one million Yemeni citizens, offering them essential services and facilities.

Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of maritime navigation in the Red Sea, which he linked directly to Egypt’s national security, particularly in light of declining Suez Canal revenues due to tensions in the region.

He advocated for a comprehensive approach to de-escalation, starting with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, and urged international actors to work towards a final and implementable resolution to the crisis in Yemen.

He also stressed the necessity for the international community to play its role in mitigating the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni people and to provide the necessary support for UN relief programs in Yemen.
