FM, EU Commission VP tackle UN COP27 preparations

Foreign Minister and President-Designate of the incoming United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change Sameh Shoukry met on Sunday with Vice-President of the European Commission and its climate envoy Frans Timmermans and his accompanying delegation.

The two sides discussed preparations for the UN COP27, mechanisms of implementing the European Green Deal and supporting the climate transformation process in Africa.

They tackled ways of boosting regional and bilateral cooperation between Egypt and the European Union on key issues for accelerating the transition to sustainable, resilient, and zero-emissions economies as well as agreeing on sparing no effort to achieve ambitious goals in the UN COP27 building on what was achieved at the Glasgow conference to keep the 1.5°C target within reach and support developing countries in adapting to the effects of climate change.

Both agreed on pushing for joint action to encourage the mobilization of resources for climate finance for developing countries, particularly African countries, including accelerating the fulfillment of the $100 billion pledge and adapting to the adverse effects of climate change.

They highlighted the importance and centrality of the role of interest groups, including the private sector, civil society and youth.

EU anew stressed its keenness to bolster cooperation with Egypt in the fields of liquified gas and supplies of green hydrogen and develop the Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Partnership.
