The Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that Egypt is leading a move of 108 states of the United Nations to finance peace-building efforts.
On its social media page, the ministry said Egypt has delivered a joint statement on behalf of 108 UN-member states at the high-level UN general assembly on financing peace-building.
In the joint statement, Egypt’s permanent delegate to the UN Osama underlined the importance of securing enough and sustainable finance for supporting peace-building activities in countries affected by conflicts.
He also stressed the importance of finding a comprehensive solution to the financing challenge through examining available finance options.
This is the first time for countries from various continents to join hands to talk about supporting investment in peace-building efforts.
Egypt as the coordinator of the African group highlighted the continent’s aspiration for hosting most activities and efforts for building peace, he said.
He added that financing peace cannot depend on voluntary contributions, stressing that maintaining peace and development gains requires sustainable financing.
Egypt called on the UN general assembly to launch government negotiations for endorsing a decision on all financing options for building peace.
Meanwhile, Egypt called for enhancing partnership between the UN and African Union to build humanitarian and institutional capabilities of the African continent.
