FM discusses with UN envoy peace in Horn of Africa

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed during a meeting Thursday with Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa Hanna Tetteh a host of issues related to peace and security in the Horn of Africa, topped by the situation in Somalia.

During a meeting held on the sidelines of the 42nd ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), the Egyptian foreign minister praised relations binding Egypt and Somalia, referring to a recent visit by the Somalia president to Egypt in July 2022, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid .

The two sides underlined the importance of the role played by international partners to support the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and back all efforts aimed at serving peace and stability in the Horn of African country, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a press release.

Talks also took up the current developments in Sudan and helping the Sudanese political powers to reach a consensus to guarantee the success of the transitional period and fulfill the aspirations of the Sudanese people to restore peace and stability, according to the spokesman.

Discussions dwelt as well on the Ethiopian dam problem and the fixed Egyptian stance regarding the need for reaching a binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam in a way that serves the benefit of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia and safeguards Egypt’s water rights, he said.

The UN official expressed appreciation of Egypt’s endeavors to support stability in the Horn of Africa and promote peace efforts in Somalia and Sudan, he added.
