FM Affirms Egypt’s Commitment to Somalia’s Stability and Security


Jeddah: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty has reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stability and security. Abdelatty emphasized the historic and brotherly relations between Egypt and Somalia during a meeting with Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ahmed Moallim Fiqi. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC-CFM).

According to State Information Service Egypt, the session, held in Jeddah, was convened to address the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people. It was initiated at the request of several member states, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Palestine. Abdelatty’s discussions with Fiqi highlighted Egypt’s ongoing support for Somalia’s efforts to bolster security and stability, as well as to expand cooperation across various domains.

e ministers noted the significance of strengthening bilateral relations, promoting cooperation through the joint ministerial committee, and following up on the outcomes of the trilateral summit between Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea held in Asmara in October 2024. The meeting underscored the elevation of Egypt-Somalia relations to a strategic partnership, declared during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo in January 2025.

Both Abdelatty and Fiqi expressed a shared commitment to enhancing security and stability in the Horn of Africa region and the Red Sea. They discussed regional developments and the necessity of increased coordination to tackle security challenges. Additionally, the formation of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) was reviewed, aligning with Somalia’s vision for security and stability.

The meeting also addressed updates in the Gaza Strip, with Abdelatty outlining Egypt’s efforts to reinforce the ceasefire agreement. Discussions extended
to Arab and Islamic initiatives within the OIC framework to garner international backing for the Arab reconstruction plan in Gaza and the outcomes of the Cairo Summit.
