The Royal referral to the Higher Council of Ulema of certain religious proposals submitted to HM King Mohammed VI by the Body in charge of revising the Family Code comes at the right time to cut short individual religious interpretations that fail to take account of social reality and changes in society, said Laila Amili, president of the “Mains Libres” association.
In a statement to MAP, Amili said that the determinants of this referral are clear, in that the Sovereign has advocated the use of moderation and open and constructive Ijtihad, in compliance with the principles and precepts of the holy religion of Islam and its purposes, adding that the Royal Letter addressed to the Head of Government on the revision of the Family Code has set the principles and guidelines to be followed in this regard.
Amili recalled that His Majesty the King, in His capacity as Commander of the Faithful and Chairman of the Higher Council of Ulema, had referred the matter to this institution, which has exclusive constitutional
authority to issue Fatwas, after the Body in charge of revising the Family Code had held wide-ranging consultations with the various political, trade union, activists and institutional players.
On Friday, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, Chairman of the Higher Council of Ulema, kindly gave His High Directives to the said Council, to examine certain questions contained in the proposals of the Body in charge of revising the Family Code, with reference to the principles and precepts of the holy religion of Islam and its purposes, and to submit a Fatwa on their subject to the Sovereign’s High Appreciation.
