Ethiopian minister for peacebuilding underscores UAE’s role in promoting tolerance, coexistence

ADDIS ABABA: Khairuddin Tezera, the Republic of Ethiopia’s Minister of State for Peacebuilding and National Reconciliation, stressed the importance of the UAE’s vital efforts to promote tolerance and coexistence around the world.

The Ethiopian official underscored the UAE’s initiatives in fostering deeper ties among nations and building bridges of communication between different countries; through these efforts, intolerance and extremism have been mitigated, thus paving the way for achieving peace and stability.

Tezera made the statement during a reception hosted by his office in Addis Ababa in honour of the delegation from Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH), led by its chancellor Dr. Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri. At a meeting between the two parties, officials reviewed several areas of common interest, including holding scientific workshops to support efforts towards building peace and stability in the international community.

During the trip, Dr. Al Dhaheri also met with Sheikh Haji Ibrahi
m Tofa, President of the Supreme Islamic Council of Ethiopia. They discussed potential cooperation areas in promoting Islamic values and humanitarian principles that elevate the human being and his right to a dignified life.

The MBZUH and the Ethiopian Ministry of Peace and the Ethiopian Islamic Council agreed to organise the Addis Ababa Conference on Citizenship and Interreligious Peace, from which the Addis Ababa Document on Citizenship and Interreligious Peace would emerge, to enhance communication and understanding between religions through a forum for open dialogue between different religions, sects and groups. It also seeks to present ideas that will help lessen discrimination and strengthen Ethiopia’s efforts to promote coexistence, in addition to discussing plans and strategies to support social peace and confront common challenges.

Dr. Al Dhaheri confirmed that the visit to Ethiopia came within the university’s mission to bolster cultural, academic and scientific ties with the Ethiopian people, and
to strengthen partnerships with entities and institutions interested in promoting peace and national reconciliation in the country.
