Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad stressed on Monday the importance of accelerating climate action worldwide without discrimination.
Addressing a conference on preparations for the UN climate conference, COP27, organized by the Egyptian Center For Economic Studies, Fouad said the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, including Africa, witnessed severe environmental phenomena such as floods, droughts, and cyclones which increased 15 times during the period from 2010 to 2022, causing the displacement of 20 million citizens.
Egypt, since day one of its presidency of the UN COP27, has been focused on building on the outcomes of the UN COP26, held in Glasgow, by urging the countries to increase their national contributions and live up to their pledges to keep the Earth’s temperature at 1.5 degrees, Fouad noted.
The minister touched on efforts exerted by the Egyptian government to enhance the participation of the private sector in climate projects.
She pointed out that the government issued the first package of green incentives within the new investment law for climate-related investment areas, including new and renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric transport, waste management, and the production of alternatives to single-use plastic bags.
