Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said that Egypt was keen on implementing environmental sanitation plans to cut waste from petroleum industries.
The minister added that oil companies in the governorates of Red Sea, Suez and South Sinai press ahead with those plans, which include establishing industrial wastewater treatment plants to reach environmental compatibility in 13 sites, at a cost of EGP 7 billion.
Fouad’s remarks came in a speech that she delivered on Tuesday 15/2/2022 at an awards ceremony held on the sidelines of the Egyptian Petroleum Show 2022 (EGYPS 2022), in the presence of a large number of Egyptian and world experts in the fields of energy and development.
The environment minister went on to say that Egypt was one of the first countries to adopt the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She asserted the State moves towards using clean, new and renewable energy sources, citing the establishment of solar and wind energy production plants and the production of refuse-derived fuels (RDF), in addition to the expansion of bioenergy production (biogas) from agricultural and animal waste.
Fouad explained that her ministry has recently introduced gasification technology to convert solid and agricultural waste into biofuels, as well as initiating waste-to-energy projects, in cooperation with private sector companies.
The environment minister also spoke about the underway projects to reduce the emissions of air pollutants and carbon emissions from oil companies, along with the real-time monitoring of smokestacks.
She concluded that her ministry has been cooperating with the bodies concerned with the environment work in different ministries to fight pollution, preserve natural resources and bring about sustainable development.
