Abu Dhabi: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has engaged in discussions with Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of the UAE-based Masdar, to explore strategies for enhancing cooperation in clean energy. This dialogue is part of the broader energy strategy and the ministry’s plan to diversify energy sources, expand renewable energy projects, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions occurred on the sidelines of the minister’s participation in the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). The meeting focused on advancements in solar and wind power generation projects executed by Masdar, along with strategies to expedite their integration into the national grid.
The talks also reviewed the progress of recently signed agreements to generate power using solar energy, with a total capacity of 1,200 megawatts, and a battery storage project with a capacity of 720 megawatt/hour. Following the meeting, Esmat visited the Al Dhafrah Solar Power Project, which boasts a power generation capacity of 2,100 megawatts. During his visit, Esmat was briefed on the technologies employed, total energy output, and the project’s contributions to reducing carbon emissions.
The 15th Assembly of IRENA took place from January 11-13 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, under the theme ‘Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,’ focusing on energy security, socio-economic development, and financing options. The IRENA Assembly also marked the beginning of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, scheduled to run until January 18.
Egypt, as a founding member of IRENA, plays a crucial role in this global intergovernmental agency for energy transformation. IRENA serves as a primary platform for international cooperation, supporting countries in their energy transitions, and providing advanced data and analyses on technology, innovation, policy, finance, and investment.
Masdar, recognized as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy companies and a leader in green hydrogen, has developed projects in over 40 countries across six continents, with a combined capacity exceeding 31.5GW.
