The clearance movement of electric and diesel vehicles has seen notable growth in the first five months of 2024, alongside an increase in the re-export of vehicles, according to Jihad Abu Nasser, representative of the vehicle sector at the Jordan Free Zone Investors Commission.
In a press statement, Abu Nasser highlighted that the clearance of electric vehicles from the Zarqa Free Zone surged by over 79 percent, with 19,307 vehicles cleared, compared to 10,803 vehicles in the same period last year.
Conversely, the clearance of gasoline vehicles plummeted by approximately 58 percent, with only 2,239 vehicles cleared compared to 5,365 in the same timeframe last year.
Diesel vehicles experienced a growth of nearly 10 percent, with 3,020 vehicles cleared, up from 2,755 vehicles in the same period in 2023. However, hybrid vehicles saw a decline of 35 percent, with 4,305 vehicles cleared, down from 6,581 in the previous year.
Additionally, export traffic increased by 14 percent, reaching 19,000 vehicles during
the same period this year.
Abu Nasser attributed the rise in electric vehicle clearance to their high manufacturing quality and specifications, reflecting an increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives as Jordanians move away from traditional fuel vehicles.
However, he expressed concern about new conformity assessment procedures issued by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization, which limit imports to vehicles that meet European and American specifications. This change, he warned, could impact future clearance movements for electric vehicles, especially as the strategic stock imported under previous regulations depletes.
Despite these concerns, Abu Nasser noted that all cleared electric vehicles in Jordan adhere to the highest standards of safety, quality, and affordability, ensuring compliance with international standards through stringent controls.
Looking ahead, Abu Nasser emphasized the opportunities and challenges facing Jordan’s automotive sector, asserting that the shift tow
ards clean energy is crucial for tackling environmental issues and achieving sustainable development.
