Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tareq el Molla said Egypt’s unique infrastructure, as regards natural gas liquefaction and export factories that are located on the Mediterranean coast, is a main pillar for promoting plans to transport natural gas to Europe.
Molla made the remarks during his meeting with European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson on the sidelines of his participation in the UN climate summit COP26, currently held in Glasgow.
The meeting touched on cooperation and coordination between Egypt and the European Union with regard to transporting and exporting natural gas to Europe, within the framework of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum.
The two sides also discussed ways of cooperation with the European Union to support Egypt’s hosting of the upcoming COP27 climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh city next year.
Molla noted that the European Union’s support for the East Mediterranean Gas Forum from the very beginning reflects distinguished cooperation with Egypt, which launched an initiative to found the forum and hosted it in Cairo.
The minister pointed out to the importance Cairo attaches to cooperation with the European Union; given that the European market is the final consumer of natural gas that is produced from the Eastern Mediterranean fields.
Meanwhile, the European commissioner emphasized the importance of Egypt’s pioneering efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean region to support partnership among the region’s countries for transporting natural gas to Europe.
The European Union has been making all efforts to support joint partnership and cooperation since the East Mediterranean Gas Forum was established, she added.
