Egypt’s House Speaker Declares Palestinian Cause a Struggle for Historical Rights

Cairo: House Speaker Counselor Hanafi Gebaly stated that achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and exchanging hostages is merely the initial step towards peace. In a speech delivered during Monday’s session, he emphasized that suggestions for the displacement of Palestinians overlook the fundamental reality that the Palestinian cause is a struggle for legitimate historical rights, not merely a geographical issue.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Gebaly underscored the Egyptian House of Representatives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s cause. He asserted that the Palestinian struggle is not only about securing legitimate rights but also a test of justice, peace, and stability. He emphasized that Egypt’s support for the Palestinian people transcends political commitment, aligning with historical truths and justice.

Gebaly highlighted that the ceasefire and exchange of hostages in Gaza are just the beginning of a lengthy journey to peace. This agreement emerged at a critical time, as Palestinians have endured siege and oppression for over 15 months amid international inaction. He praised Egyptian efforts, alongside those of the United States and Qatar, for reinforcing Egypt’s central role in Arab issues.

The Speaker stressed that Egypt has worked diligently to achieve and sustain the agreement, focusing on implementing its provisions, preventing escalation, and providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. Gebaly warned that displacement proposals pose a significant threat to regional security and stability.

He affirmed that the two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace, advocating for an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. This solution ensures regional security and stability. Gebaly called for a comprehensive political process to empower the Palestinian National Authority and support reconstruction and humanitarian aid.

He concluded by urging the international community to uphold its moral and humanitarian duties towards the Palestinian people, stressing that this responsibility extends beyond the Arab world to the global community.
