Egypt’s consul general in Melbourne probes cooperation in water management

Egypt’s Consul General in Melbourne Haitham Mokhtar visited Shepparton city, which is located 200 kilometers away from central Melbourne, Australia, for talks on cooperation in the domain of water management.

The discussions fall within the framework of the current collaboration between the Egyptian consulate in Melbourne, the Australia Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AACCI) and the Victorian Government’s trade and investments arm, Global Victoria, according to an official press release.

Accompanying the Consul General was a delegation that included President of the Victorian branch of the AACCI Naim Melhem, Regional Manager of Middle East, Africa and Oceania at Global Victoria Madelaine Sexton and officials of Shepparton City Council.

During the visit, the delegation got first-hand information about Shepparton’s state-of-the-art water management system that has been developed in response to the severe ‘Millennium drought’, which has stricken the Goulburn Valley in the early 2000s.

Mokhtar and the
delegation also visited Rubicon water technology company, Aquatec water treatment company, and Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMW), Australia’s largest rural water corporation.

The itinerary of the Egyptian consul also included a visit to the SPC food factory.

In January 2024, The Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, along with the El Sewedy Electric Company, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Australian company Rubicon on collaboration to improve water management efficiency.
