Egypt’s Consul-General Highlights Growing Economic Ties with Hong Kong


Cairo: Consul-General of Egypt in Hong Kong, Baher Sheweikhi, expressed appreciation for the progress in bilateral trade and economic relations. Sheweikhi emphasized the significant investments by Hutchison Port Holdings, a Hong Kong-based company, which has invested $1.6 billion in the development and operation of container terminals at Egypt’s Alexandria and Ain Sokhna ports.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during a meeting with Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Sheweikhi acknowledged her new appointment and discussed the export of double-decker public transport buses from Egypt to Hong Kong. The buses are exported by Egypt’s MCV-eg to Hong Kong’s KMB Company.

The conversation also explored opportunities to diversify existing cooperation, particularly in maritime and air transport, and the management and operation of seaports. Hong Kong’s expertise as a global logistics hub and one of the busiest container ports supports these d
iscussions.

Sheweikhi highlighted Egypt’s recent advancements in seaport development, aimed at attracting more foreign investments, especially from Hong Kong. The diplomat also noted Hong Kong’s efforts to expand its market reach into the Middle East and North Africa region.

Mable Chan expressed her support for the ongoing collaboration between Egypt and Hong Kong, emphasizing the importance of enhancing maritime and air transport cooperation. She also highlighted the potential benefits of leveraging Hong Kong’s seaport management expertise to serve mutual interests.
