Egyptian, Lebanese FMs discuss latest developments in Lebanon

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Friday 18/10/2024 to his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib Egypt’s commitment to continue providing all means of support to Lebanon during the current watershed situation.

During a phone call, the Egyptian FM highlighted the recent arrival of a new shipment of Egyptian relief aid to the Lebanese capital of Beirut, including 22 tons of food supplies and essential items needed to provide basic living conditions for displaced people.

According to the Egyptian top diplomat, the total amount of relief aid sent by Egypt to support the Lebanese government and people has reached 44 tons so far.

During the call, both sides discussed the latest developments in Lebanon and the efforts being made to contain the deteriorating conditions in the region.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement, Abdelatty highlighted to his Lebanese counterpart Cairo’s intensive efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

He further stressed the
need to work on de-escalating the rising tensions during this critical phase to prevent the region from slipping into a full-scale war, which would have severe consequences for regional and international peace and security.

During the call, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of the Israeli forces’ deliberate targeting of sites and equipment belonging to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) forces in southern Lebanon.

In addition, he highlighted Cairo’s stance in supporting the empowerment of Lebanese national institutions, particularly the Lebanese army, to achieve stability in Lebanon, stressing the need to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The top diplomats’ discussion comes amid the rising tensions in the region following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by the Israeli military in Gaza and the ongoing brutal Israel aggression on Gaza and Lebanon and threats to attack Tehran, raising fears of a full-scale war.
