Egyptian, Iranian FMs discuss rapid developments in Middle East


A phone call took place between Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, on Monday. The two ministers discussed the rapid developments in the Middle East, particularly the situations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the urgent need to halt the escalation in light of the current crises.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s deep concern regarding the rising tensions in the region and the potential expansion of conflict, which poses serious risks to both regional and international peace and security. He underscored the necessity of reducing tensions and exercising self-restraint to avoid slipping into a broader regional war, which could have dire repercussions for the stability of the entire region.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs outlined Egypt’s stance on the developments in southern Lebanon, reiterating Egypt’s firm rejection of any violations o
f Lebanese sovereignty and the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening Lebanese institutions, particularly the Lebanese Army, as they are crucial for achieving stability amidst the current political turmoil. Abdelatty emphasized the need to implement all aspects of Security Council Resolution 1701 and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to providing political and humanitarian support to help Lebanon navigate its current challenges.

Furthermore, he addressed the ongoing presidential vacancy in Lebanon, urging all parties to support the country in electing a president during this critical period. He also stressed the urgent need to halt Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and called for full and unconditional access to humanitarian and medical aid for the Gaza Strip.
