NICOSIA: Egyptian Ambassador in Nicosia Mohamed Zaazou engaged in discussions with Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou to enhance bilateral cooperation, focusing on the natural gas sector in Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Ambassador Zaazou highlighted Egypt’s interest in strengthening the coordination between the two nations to facilitate the extraction of Cypriot natural gas and its transportation to Egypt. The plan includes liquefying the gas in Egypt for export to global markets, thereby emphasizing the strategic significance of their partnership in the energy sector.
Minister Papanastasiou, reflecting on his visit to the Idku natural gas liquefaction plant last month, commended Egypt’s skilled workforce in the energy field. He expressed enthusiasm about participating in the upcoming EGYPES 2025 event, which will focus on building a secure and sustainable energy future.
The discussions also covered potential development
s in the Cypriot gas fields of Kronos and Aphrodite, with plans to link them to Egyptian infrastructure. Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone, covering 98,707 square kilometers and divided into 13 exploration squares, presents significant opportunities for such collaborations.
