Egypt has welcomed the newly reached agreement between the Yemeni government and the Houthis to address the longstanding crisis in Yemen.

Egypt voiced its steadfast support for the regional and international efforts aimed at resolving the conflict, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates on Tuesday.

Cairo is hopeful that the agreement will pave the way for a comprehensive resolution to the Yemeni crisis, the statement pointed out.

It called for fulfilling the aspirations of the Yemeni people in line with established terms and decisions, including UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

Additionally, Egypt announced its intention to explore the possibility of establishing a direct airline route between Cairo and Sanaa, considering all relevant technical and logistical factors, added the statement.

Earlier Tuesday, Yemen’s government and the Houthis agreed to halt tit-for-tat banking sanctions as they wrestle for control of the country’s financial inst
itutions.

The Houthis have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since March 2015, months after they seized the capital Sanaa and most of Yemen’s population centres, forcing the internationally recognised government south to Aden.?
