Egypt to build around 250,000 new hotel rooms to promote tourism

Egypt is currently working to build 200,000-250,000 new hotel rooms as part of its target to attract 30 million tourists by 2028, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Sunday during the cabinet’s meeting at its premises in New Alamein.

Madbouly added that Egypt currently places great importance on the tourism sector.

He said it is one of the main sectors which the government works to develop and enhance its performance as part of its structural reform programme, which includes tourism, industry, agriculture, communications, and information technology.

Moreover, Madbouly noted that Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan ElKhatib directed officials to encourage more investors who work in developing and operating establishments and hotel rooms. This will speed up the rate of establishing and operating the needed hotel rooms, besides the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in this regard.

Such projects have many criteria: above all is the presence of catalysts that serve tour
ism in each area and linking these places to entertainment destinations, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy stated.

He also suggested establishing a bank for tourism opportunities, including a unit to propagate these opportunities.

‘We will work as one team with the appointed ministers to promote integrated tourism opportunities,’ stated ElKhatib.

Meanwhile, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny announced new investment opportunities in the hospitality sector in New Alamein City and other Egyptian cities.

He said 10 projects in New Alamein can add 9,000 hotel rooms; two in New Damietta City can add 2,200 hotel rooms; one in the west of Port Said City can add 1,200 hotel rooms; and one in New Aswan can add 1,200 hotel rooms.

El-Sherbiny added that there are suggestions to encompass more than 200,000 hotel rooms in new cities that fall under the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and the Tourism Development Authority (TDA).

In addition, 35 suggested loc
ations in 10 new cities and three governorates are available to establish hotel rooms, he clarified, adding that the TDA has also offered another 16 locations.

El-Sherbiny also stated that the total area of land suggested by the NUCA and TDA spans 1,381 acres.

He also noted that 12 places available for hotel activity in the Alamein Marina Centre and its southern extension will add around 3,000 hotel rooms.

Among the proposed investment opportunities in the New Administrative Capital is the iconic tower that will open up 485 hotel rooms. This tower is distinguished by being part of the Central Business District, El-Sherbiny added.

Moreover, the ministry targets building 1,700 new hotel rooms through the projects proposed for two pieces of land in New Cairo.

The minister also revealed that around 580 hotel rooms will be built in the Sixth of October City and October Gardens along with 250 in Assiut Governorate’s New Nasser City.

Similarly, in July, the cabinet approved a new initiative worth EGP 50 bill
ion to support the tourism sector and build more hotel rooms.
